Pre-cancers and
Skin Cancers - Use of Sunscreen & Sun Protection
The overwhelming
cause for pre-cancers and skin cancers is too much sunlight
over the decades. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection
factor of 15 or higher, and use a very water resistant one
if you will be exercising and sweating, swimming or rafting.
Ideally you should apply it 15 minutes before you go out in
the sun, and reapply it 45 minutes later, and reapply it
every hour if you are sweating or towelling off. Wearing a
hat with a 3 inch or wider brim will protect your face and
ears and neck. Put your shirt on in the middle of the
afternoon to prevent sunburning your back. Try to do your
daily activities before 10 in the morning or after 3:30.
When in doubt - err on the side of too much sunscreen and
wear protective clothing!
News flash: By the
year 2002 the highest SPF you can buy will be a "#30+".
"Waterproof" sunscreen will now be called "water
resistant" and "very water resistant."
These
extraordinary products are only available through your
